The United Nations Global Compact defines supply chain sustainability as "the management of environmental, social and economic impacts and promotion of good governance practices throughout the entire life cycle of goods and services". This is our framework to approach sustainability in the Chiesi global value chain.
We are committed to becoming Net Zero by 2035. In order to achieve this, we must reduce emissions across our entire operations, including our global value chain. This ambitious goal requires the close collaboration of our partners as Chiesi is not in direct control of all of the emissions we currently emit, and our partner activity contributes to our overall carbon footprint. By setting fair, yet strong, sustainability requirements with our partners, we can help to drive the change we need to see in order to make an impact.
The Chiesi code of interdependence
Co-created with our partners and suppliers in 2019, the Code of Interdependence is a set of common values through which Chiesi aims to only collaborate with companies and partners that share our commitment to sustainability. This innovative approach aims to transform the concept of a supply chain to an ecosystem, where each stakeholder is recognised as essential to the others, fostering mutual learning and continuous improvement, as well as high standards.
We verify the compliance of our partners and suppliers with the Code of Interdependence through audits and self-assessment questionnaires. Our suppliers and partners are also invited to visit Chiesi offices to gain access to education and training on improving environmental and social responsibility.
To ensure our Code of Interdependence continues to drive us forward at pace, we revise it every two years.
MEASURING OUR SUPPLY CHAIN
Chiesi uses the EcoVadis platform to evaluate the sustainability of our suppliers which is an international, validated, independent provider.
By analysing our business partners on elements such as ethical behaviour, environmental protection, labour and human rights, our sustainable procurement practices and ethical business practices can be reinforced.
EcoVadis' principles are closely linked to Chiesi’s own sustainability goals and allow us to also use the information through the EcoVadis scoring system to monitor our own progress against our Scope 3 emissions goal.
An important benefit of the EcoVadis scoring system is its ability to allow Chiesi to engage in and continue a dialogue on sustainability with our partners encouraging us all to deepen our commitments in line with our own goals.
In 2024, we were awarded the EcoVadis Platinum Medal with a score of 83/100.
HUMAN RIGHTS ACROSS THE VALUE CHAIN
Human rights is also a significant area covered by our Code of Interdependence. We demand fair working conditions, child labour prevention, workers' rights, and social dialogue of ourselves and all of our partners and suppliers.
The evaluation of all our suppliers and business partners includes assessing their approach to human rights, and high standards are a crucial precondition for their selection.
